What is 'Organisational Fitness©'?

Based on a completely different approach to thinking about how organisations change, Represent has created the concept of Organisational Fitness.

Experience, and our clients, told us that traditional approaches look fine on paper. The only problem is that organisations - and the humans inside them - don't work that way. So, working with our extended network of practitioners and clients, we sought to come up with something more useful and more realistic.

'I wouldn't start from here, if I was you'

Part of understanding how any individual organisation will approach change is to understand those things which are part of its' coding, or corporate dna. These elements will often lie in its' formation and early history and will remain consistent over time.

'The child becomes the man'

As human grow and evolve, so do organisations. Understanding where you are on the evolutionary path will help any organisation to build appropriate strategies for change. Change as evolution allows you to work on one step today whilst understanding that tomorrow will be different, even if you don't know in what way.

'No man is an island'

Organisations do not exist in a vacuum. The growth of globalisation has helped us all to understand that our environment is more complex than simply markets, customers and competitors. Organisational fitness requires understanding of your own business 'ecosystem' and how this understanding informs strategic decision-making.

'It ain't what you do, it's the way that you do it'

Core organisational, team and individual capabilities are required in managing the evolution of your organisation. Moving the goal from achieving specific organisational change towards achieving the fitness which allows you to succeed, irrespective of the focus of change. Some of these capabilities will already be strengths; some not. Assessing your adaptation skills allows you to manage and develop them.
